Dale Jepsen, Light Air and FUN

Threats of  thunder and lightning couldn’t stop the good times at the 2013 Dale Jepsen One Design Regatta held Saturday and Sunday, September 14th and 15th. There were strong fleets all around, including 505s, Lasers, Tasars and a huge contingent of FJs doing battle on Bellingham Bay.  Saturday brought shifty westerlies and 6 to 8 knots of breeze.  The RC banged off 4 to 5 races depending on the class. It was a good day to be light and smart with oscillating breeze and the current making heroes and zeroes all day. Sunday started with a fog delay shore postponement until the breeze came in from the South to obliterate it. Full on hiking in 15 to 18 was the norm, with the last racing becoming a giant reach fest due to a 30 degree shift  mid race. The race committee was able to get off 3 Sunday for a total of 7 for the regatta.

The party off the water was equally enjoyable, with a complimentary keg, mouth watering pulled pork, and Karaoke till midnight. Sunday’s award ceremony recognized Laser sailor extraordinaire Michael O’Brien as the overall champion. Angus Brackett and crew took the 505 title, as well as second over all.  Taylor Martin and his crew took the FJ title. Liam Hood had a very strong performance in his Laser Radial.  Tasar World Champion Anthony Boscolo and number 2 Mike Karas came to Bellingham to duke it out again, with Anthony Boscolo narrowly edging out Mike Karas. To all who came, thank you.  If you didn’t make it, please put us on the calender for next year. The 2014 Dale Jepsen One Design Regatta will be held September 20th and 21st. We hope to make next year even better!
