Since the 1970s the Seattle Laser Fleet has been hosting the Frigid Digit regatta. This year the name couldn’t have been more apt for the February 8-9 event.

Laser, Radial, Tasar and Opti sailors gathered at Shilshole Bay Marina amid forecasts of cold and snow. With near freezing temperatures on Saturday and just a bit less cold Sunday, it tested the resolve everyone involved. An overnight snowstorm made rigging a new kind of exercise on Sunday morning. Winds were 15-20 on Saturday and 5-12 on Sunday, providing a good all around test.

Eight races were held for the Lasers and Radials. Dan Falk, on the strength of four straight firsts on the windy conditions Saturday, won a tie-breaker over Carl Buchan. The last race of the event may have been Falk’s best, as he and Buchan worked their way through the fleet on a short course to finish second and third. Had Falk finished fourth or worse, the win would have gone to Buchan. Third was Mike Johnson, whose consistency both days held off a late charge from Seattle Laser Fleet captain Carlos Abisambra.
